So, if Apple was a wide west cowboy, and he was walking through town right now, he’d be holding his head high sporting a nice Smith and Weston getting ready to walk in to the saloon for a drink… when Cowboy Apple steps in a huge stinky pile of horse you know what…. That’s right right folks, Apple has a small (but stinky) issue on their hands.
Final Cut is having issues opening some FCP projects. Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t nailed down the problem yet, and no one has any idea what is causing it, or where it started. Basically is goes like this (some of the time)…. save a project on one FCP machine, go to open in on another running the same version, and Final Cut presents you with an error that reads: This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut.
“WHAT?! I just saved it!” Yes, that’s right. Your project can’t be opened. And some times when you go back to the original machine you saved the project on, and that machine will not open it.
Now there is a work around. It annoying, but you do get your sequence back…
- Open the project wherever you can (if it opens GREAT… use it, but if you are looking to move it from one place to another, continue with these steps.)
- Open the sequence or senquences you need to send else where.
- Choose file Export -> XML

- Choose “Apple XML Interchange Format, version 3. I suggest checking “Include Master Clips Outside Selection.”
- Push OK.
- Move that file to the machine you want to move the project to
- Open FCP, Start a new project.
- Import the XML file.
You’ll notice that you don’t get your well organized browser with all your clips and imported files in it, even though they are in the timeline. You’ll also notice your render files are gone…. basically you now have your timeline and nothing else…. GREAT.
I’ll keep you posted on updates. Also check the Apple Forums. The thread I am following is here: Project unreadable or too new…
Hope that his curse doesn’t get to you… if it does, post in the forum and let Apple know!
